One of the realities about living in modern times is that the levels of pollution in the air that we breathe do not appear to be abating. Despite concerted efforts on the part of government officials and private citizens alike, the situation is getting dire. A recent study conducted by the Greater London Authority found that every citizen in that cosmopolitan city was regularly breathing in air with pollution levels beyond the maximum acceptable level and that 95% of them were exceeding that pollution level by 50% or more.
Luckily, the majority of us do not live in a huge metropolis such as London, but that does not mean that we do not care about breathing clean air. Whether we deal with allergies, asthma, a roommate that smokes, or any other form of pollutant, an investment in clean air (and water) is an investment in the health of our families. Another benefit of modern times is that air filtration technology has improved by leaps and bounds even in the last dozen years or so. Whereas previous air purifiers were little more than fans pushing air through a woven filter, technology has brought us to a completely different plane. The Ultimate Large Room Air Purifier (ULRAP) combines 8 major components to bring you and your family clean air:
Ultra-Quiet* Heavy Duty Fan: The best filtration system in the world achieves nothing if air does not go through the filter. The larger the room that you are trying to purify, the more powerful the fan must be. Without airflow, there is no filtration. This is why we built the ULRAP around a very powerful fan. Now, we do call this fan “ultra-quiet” and it absolutely can be quiet. At a low fan speeds, it barely registers 22 decibels. Having said that, when you are running the unit on high, it does reach 55 decibels. This is not unbearable in any way but you will definitely hear it. There is just no easy practical way to make a heavy duty fan that is also constantly quiet. Moving that much air takes a lot of rotation at a very high speed and that rotation makes a bit of noise. Now, unless the room is very dirty, you almost never need to run the fan at high speeds, but we built the system to allow you to do so even if we sacrifice a bit of quiet at those levels. Finally, our brushless fan is energy star rated because we wanted to keep the electric cost of running the air purifier as low as physically possible.
Pre-Filter: Although most of the things that can harm us in the air are microscopic, there are sometimes larger airborne pollutants that need to be stopped. That is why we include a pre-filter to make sure that anything of any noticeable size is stopped dead in its tracks before it even makes it into the air purifier.
HEPA filter: HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air and it is essentially the only true standard in air filtration products. Although it is by no means enough to guarantee fresh air, a HEPA filter should be an integral part of any clean air strategy in your home or office. In order to qualify as a HEPA filter, the filter must be mechanical and block 99.97% of particles under 0.3 microns. What we mean when we say mechanical is that this filter does not change any chemical compound or use any other form of power or electricity to modify pollutants. It is simply a very small physical barrier that combined with a powerful fan will rid your air of small particulates such as dust, tobacco smoke, fungi, pollen, mites, pet dander, and the vast majority of bacteria.
Activated Carbon Filter: Once we get rid of the large airborne particles that are trapped by the pre-filter and the small particles that are stopped by the HEPA filter, the next problem is chemical and organic contaminants. The biggest and most harmful iteration of these are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
VOCs are gases emitted from liquids and solids and can have some adverse health effects ranging from eye, nose, and throat irritation and headaches, all the way to liver damage, kidney damage, damage to the central nervous system, and potentially cancer. These VOCs most often come from paint products, automotive chemicals, pesticide, dry-cleanied linens, insect repellants, chemical cleanser and disinfectants, and print toners. It is important to note that the list above is just a general overview but it is not all-inclusive. The problem of VOCs is compounded by the fact that in the US we do not have any established guidelines for their usage in non-industrial applications. As such, the first line of defense is not only to minimize the use of harsh chemicals in the office and at home but to ensure to have proper ventilation whenever any chemicals are used. Even if a chemical smell is not particularly irksome, it can certainly have detrimental effects to your health.
The good news is that activated carbon filters have a pretty good track record of neutralizing VOCs. The pollutant organic molecules get trapped into the carbon structure’s pores in a process called “adsorption“. Once the VOCs are adsorbed into the microporous structure of the activated carbon, they will stay there and out of the air you breathe.
Note: it is important to replace the activated carbon filter regularly (every 6-12 months depending on the usage) because unlike mechanical filters that will continue to work as long as they have regular cleaning, the activated carbon must be replenished in order to keep providing area for the polluting substrates to adsorb to.
Ultraviolet Light: Because the earth’s atmosphere blocks virtually all of the UV-C light emitted by the sun, organisms on earth have uniformly failed to evolve in a way that we have substantial protection from UV-C rays. Although larger organisms such as humans have skin to protect ourselves (at a cost, as UV-C can cause skin cancer), smaller organisms have no such protection. This is useful to us because we can use UV-C light at a 257 nm wavelength to irradiate harmful pathogens and break down their DNA. It is a form of chemical free sterilization that has been used in the medical industry for decades but is just now making its way into homes and offices. The UV light in our ULRAP is not a little LED that was put there simply for marketing purposes. The UV light in our unit is a heavy duty light with some real power behind it (and lasts 10,000 hours of operation!). Additionally, the light is placed in such a way not only to maximize the germicidal effects on harmful microbes but also to completely prevent any UVC from reaching your eyes or skin. It should be noted though that it is very important to turn the unit off whenever changing out the filters to prevent any exposure to your eyes. If you decide for whatever reason that you must open the system while it is on, we can provide UV protective glasses at no additional cost to you. Safety first!
Air Ionizer: Air ionization systems have been made famous by the Ionic Breeze marketed and sold by the sharper image. The premise behind the product is sound. Airborne particles are attracted to electrically charged molecules (ions). “Ionizing” the air will then help in bringing these airborne particles down to the ground and to walls so that they are less likely to be inhaled by people. Testing of this process by the National Health Service in the United Kingdom resulted in a drastic decrease of airborne acinetobacter infections. Still, after selling thousands and thousands of these units, Sharper Image was sued because many claimed that the benefits of air ionizers were not even up to par with a simple HEPA filter. That may very well be true but we decided to add an ionization system to our ULRAP not in order to replace a HEPA filter but as a redundancy. We know from the British National Health Service studies that air ionizers work. If we can modify our product to make it even slightly more effective at purifying our air, we will do so. Our ULRAP may be redundant but we are happy that it is.
Intelligent Sensor: One aspect that we thought to compensate for in creating the Ultimate Large Room Air Purifier is human error. We realized that people regularly purchase air purifiers and leave them running at a low to medium setting and never change the settings again. This is much better than not having air filtration at all but is akin to not accelerating when you merge onto the highway from the side streets. When the temperature rises, we usually increase the speed of our ceiling fans and our AC systems increase the time that they are running. Analogously, air purifiers should run at higher speeds when there are more pollutants in the air than when the air is relatively free of harmful microbes. For this reason, we designed the ULRAP to have an intelligent sensor. When the system notices that the air is “dirty,” it increase the speed of the fan. Once the air has been purified substantially, it lowers the speed. Of course there is always a manual override and if you would like to lower the speed or increase it beyond what the intelligent sensor decides, you are able to do so easily.
